  • Teaching Tuesday This week in our series of outdoor architecture we will discuss an architect's role in designing fire pits and fireplaces. Architects play a key role in designing outdoor fireplaces and fire pits by ensuring they are safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. They consider factors like layout, seating arrangements, and materials to integrate these features seamlessly into the overall outdoor space. Architects also adhere to building codes and sustainable practices to ensure safety and minimize environmental impact. By involving architects in the design process, homeowners can benefit from well-planned fire features that enhance their outdoor living experience. Join us next week when we will discuss covered porches.

  • Motivational Monday Welcome to another Monday, where we start off like the sun, weak but gaining strength as the day goes on. Like Charles Dickens said, "The sun himself is weak when he first rises; and gathers strength and courage as the day goes on." Let's face this week with determination, knowing that as we progress, we'll become more capable and confident. Let's make this Monday a day of progress and achievement!

  • Feature Friday We sponsored and participated in the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce's Towers and Turrets tour last weekend in Doylestown, PA. Representing Phillips & Donovan Architects, LLC were Brian Saylor, manning our booth, Joe Phillips, stationed at the Mercer Museum, Tommy Dimick, stationed at Lawyer's Row, and Heather Phillips and Catalyn Crean and family as tour participants. Tour participants visited 11 properties featuring a tower or turret as part of their architecture. Each participant started at the Michener Museum and was given a map, an illustration of architectural details, and space to identify pertinent details and facts for each building. At the end of the tour, everyone went to the Moravian Tile Works for a reception, trivia contest with prizes, and VIP tour of the Tile Works. Despite the rain, everyone enjoyed learning about architecture and Doylestown history.

  • Thursday happenings Last week, 2 of our designers, Anna-Kate Payha and Tommy Dimick, attended a networking affair inspired by the Kentucky Derby at Gerhard's Appliances. The gathering was orchestrated by The Professional Women in Building Council, a group Anna-Kate proudly belongs to within the Home Builder’s Association. From equestrian themes and elegant headwear to refreshing mint juleps and exciting prizes, it provided an excellent platform for networking among designers, contractors, and suppliers in our area.

  • Teaching Tuesday What do architects have to do with outdoor design? Outdoor design for architects involves planning and creating functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces as part of architectural projects. This can include landscaping, hardscaping, seating arrangements, and lighting to enhance the overall design of the building. Architects focus on integrating outdoor spaces seamlessly with the building's interior design, ensuring they meet the users' needs while complementing the architectural style and vision. Outdoor design allows architects to extend the living or working environment beyond the building, creating inviting and comfortable outdoor areas for people to enjoy.

  • Throwback Thursday to 2003 when Phillips & Donovan Architects, LLC embarked on the transformative renovations and additions to the Churchville Nature Center, a sanctuary established back in 1964 amidst sprawling farmland and dense forests. Even as Lower Bucks County urbanized, the center stayed true as a green haven. In 2010, the center achieved LEED Silver Certification, marking a milestone for its commitment to sustainability. The Green Building Demonstration Hall, featuring rainwater collection systems, solar panels, and other eco-friendly technologies, serves as a showcase of innovation.

  • What we are working on Wednesday Phillips & Donovan Architects, LLC is currently working on a family room and kitchen in the Easton area to better suit our client's expanding family. The goal was to create a space that seamlessly merges indoor and outdoor living. To achieve this, we vaulted the entire area and optimized the placement of windows to maximize natural light and connection with the surrounding environment.

  • Teaching Tuesday Welcome to our new series on landscaping and outdoor spaces in architecture. The time of the year has come where many of us are deciding on what to plant. We are here to help as we discuss plant selection this week. Plant selection in a landscape for this time of year depends on various factors such as climate, region, and specific project requirements. Spring is an ideal time for planting as it allows new plants to establish roots before the hot summer months. Consider selecting plants that bloom in spring to add color and vibrancy to the landscape and complement your building. Pay attention to the sun exposure and moisture levels in different areas of your site to choose plants that thrive in those conditions. In summary, select plants that match the landscape's style and function, complementing the architecture and considering space requirements.
